A LAND OF CHARACTER
Visit Sarzeau in the Gulf of Morbihan
Where is Sarzeau?
On the Rhuys peninsula, some twenty kilometers from the campsite near Vannes, Sarzeau separates the waters of the Gulf of Morbihan from those of the Atlantic. It faces Île aux Moines and Île d’Arz on the Gulf side, and Baie de Quiberon on the ocean side.
Its territory covers a good half of the Rhuys peninsula. Several islands are attached to it, including Œufs, Godec, Brannec, Govihan and Stibiden. It’s the ideal place for a family vacation with your feet in the water, in aseaside resort at the foot of the Atlantic Ocean beaches in the heart of the Morbihan department.

IN THE HEART OF THE PENINSULA
Suscinio Castle
Sarzeau used to be a remarkable hunting ground and was known for its gentle way of life. That’s why the Dukes of Brittany chose Suscinio as their second home, with its superb views over Suscinio Bay and Penvins beach.
Since then, the manor has been transformed into a formidable fortress (14th and 15th centuries). Today, it houses a history museum and an almost complete presentation of a medieval pavement, open to the public all year round. It also hosts various cultural events at the height of the season. Nearby is the Château de Kerlevenan.

The menhirs of Sarzeau
Megalithic landscapes are quite common in Brittany. The menhir at Sarzeau is called the menhir de Kermaillard, nicknamed Guegen Amonen meaning “The lump of butter” due to its shape when lying down. It is in fact a granite monolith, 5.35m long, discovered lying on the ground and straightened in 1988.
Engravings of a small handled axe, a square cartouche and a large crescent were discovered on the flat buried surface, allowing us to date this monument to the Neolithic period, circa -5000 -3000 BC. The face visible before it was straightened features 17 cupules, circular engravings that are difficult to interpret.

AN INVITATION TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS
The Duer bird sanctuary
Ornithology enthusiasts and the curious will be delighted to discover the Duer marsh, classified as an ornithological reserve. Located at the head of Sarzeau Bay, it is home to over 160 species of birds, including geese, teal, black-tailed godwit, curlew, spoonbill… depending on the season. In spring, it is frequented by breeding white stilt, common tern and shelduck.
Although it is forbidden to enter the marsh to ensure the birds’ peace and quiet, two easily accessible observatories at the back of the marsh allow you to watch the incessant ballet of birds during migration. These observatories are open to the public all year round. You can also watch the birds in the many surrounding creeks.
