Where is Sarzeau?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the Rhuys peninsula, some twenty kilometers from the campsite near Vannes<\/a>, Sarzeau<\/a> separates the waters of the Gulf of Morbihan<\/a> from those of the Atlantic. It faces \u00cele aux Moines and \u00cele d’Arz on the Gulf side, and Baie de Quiberon on the ocean side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its territory covers a good half of the Rhuys peninsula. Several islands are attached to it, including \u0152ufs, Godec, Brannec, Govihan and Stibiden. Suscinio Castle<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sarzeau used to be a remarkable hunting ground and was known for its gentle way of life. That’s why the Dukes of Brittany<\/strong> chose Suscinio as their second home, with its superb views over Suscinio Bay and Penvins beach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, the manor has been transformed into a formidable fortress (14th<\/sup> and 15th<\/sup> centuries). Today, it houses a history museum and an almost complete presentation of a medieval pavement, open to the public all year round. It also hosts various cultural events at the height of the season. Nearby is the Ch\u00e2teau de Kerlevenan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The menhirs of Sarzeau<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Megalithic landscapes are quite common in Brittany. The menhir at Sarzeau<\/strong> is called the menhir de Kermaillard<\/a>, nicknamed Guegen Amonen meaning “The lump of butter” due to its shape when lying down. It is in fact a granite monolith, 5.35m long, discovered lying on the ground and straightened in 1988. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engravings of a small handled axe, a square cartouche and a large crescent were discovered on the flat buried surface, allowing us to date this monument to the Neolithic period, circa -5000 -3000 BC. The face visible before it was straightened features 17 cupules, circular engravings that are difficult to interpret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
